Technology and I don’t usually get along. This is evident in the fact that many programs on my personal computer aren’t updated, I rarely use Skype, and that I still believe that by pressing the escape key on my keyboard I can instantly vanish from any problematic situation. Lately, the Wi-Fi (I believe it sands for Wireless Fi) here at the house has been acting up. I have spent many nights reasoning with it to try to get it to pull up even my e-mail, so I feel lucky that I was able to write this. I’m not able to post any pictures however, because negotiations fell through halfway through the talk. I apologize for missing last week’s post. I blame technology.
And now for something completely different.
It’s.
The past few weeks have been pretty good. Kind of the usual, but good. I’ve caught cool bugs such as the Spiny Crab-like Orb Weaver (a spider that is quite small despite the grand title) and the Violet Tail Dancer (a cool little damselfly).
We’ve found, cataloged, and GPS more horses in an area they haven’t been in before. We decided to stake them out one day to see where they were entering the area from, but all they did was eat and sleep all day. I guess I can’t argue with their logic. Being a college age guy, it’s worked for me.
Also I’ve been hand-making bug traps to survey the creepy crawlies on our properties more efficiently. I’ve been doing a lot of sewing due to the fact that they are made of cloth. It has been taking me a couple of weeks to make two and I’m still not done. Being a twenty year old guy, sewing isn’t exactly in my skill set, but I’m proud of my work as messy as it is. I just hope the bugs don’t laugh.
On the flip side…ish
Outside of my internship things are going well too. I did mini-golf, walked on the beach, walked on the dunes (note to self; remember sandals next time I go mid-day), and ate pizza from La Dolce Vida made by a guy who grew up in Sicily (no other pizza touches it. Besides my grandparent’s. Nothing beats that.).
I also went kayaking last weekend. It was fun and I made it halfway from Manteo harbor to the barrier islands in the time I rented it. Next time, I go all the way. I tried to do a recording for a video blog update while kayaking. You can see by my plain words how well that ended up. Many bloopers.
Finally, I went to a farm on the island here called Island Farm (go figure). It’s a cool little site where people dress up as people from the past and tell you how things were, and how it’s so much better now-a-days. They recreated a small civil war era family farm/home. It was nice, simple, and had a hint of pine. Next time any one is down here, check it out. It’s a good way to kill and hour or so, you learn a lot, and its just kind cool.
Scavenging for Horses
I found more. Three…but due to the wireless-fi here, I can’t up load pictures, so I’ll just give you guys the titles and you can imagine them until I can finally get pictures up.
Horse 4: “Somebody get me some Windex”
Horse 5: : “Horse”
Horse 6: Pancake Batter”
Horse 7: “Oh no I’m stuck in Quicksand”
Horse 8: “I learned Today”
Well, that’s all for the past couple of weeks. I’ll catch you at the next post; Wi-Fi permitting.
I’m happy, and I hope you’re happy too.
Always glad to get a message from The Action Man.
Manteo Coffee shop has wi-fi…we want pictures!
The bugs may snicker at your sewing, but I’m sure you’ll have the last laugh.
Yeah their mockery wont last long when they hit 70% ethanol and realize they can’t swim!
I think you might have the makings of a fine book title: The Sicilian from Manteo. (Sounds like you found some good eating) Now all you need is a good story line to fill the inside of the book cover. Have a good time and watch out for ticks……
Almost sounds like a classic book title! I’ll do it! That was some good pizza. I’m definitely having a good time, an thanks. I’ll be careful, but I don’t know who is looking more carefully for each other me for the ticks or the ticks for me! Ha ha.
I’m not sure which horse title is more intriguing: the Windex one or the pancake batter one.
And you think you know a person! I would have put my money on you adopting Pancake Batter as your very own horse.
If it was Blueberry Pancake Batter, the horse would totally be mine. But that movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding says Windex gets rid of zits.
I knew there was Thoughts Appear logic involved!
My favorite is the quicksand one. I made that name up on the spot while writing, and on the horse it looks like someone put googly eyes on it or something.
Along with hyperbole, I am quite practiced in the non-art of non sequitur, and I suppose this is non sequiturish:
I don’t read a lot of fiction. I also occasionally do things that I don’t do.
So there was this one time a few years ago when I read a novel and I wouldn’t be able to tell you the title or the author’s name or even much of what happened in the book, but I remember the main character lived in a coastal area in South Carolina and there was much description of her daily count of the sea turtle eggs that washed up on shore. I would read the book on the train to and from work, wishing I were there helping out with the turtle eggs instead.
Your blog reminds me of that book. Except there aren’t turtle eggs. And I think she Skyped a lot.
I’m making that last thing up.
Thank you very much. I like to try and make people I know more concious about the environment and show how cool and delicate it can be. I’m very glad you have an appreciation for outdoors or outdoorsy-like things.
That sounds like a cool book. If you ever remember what it was, I’d be interested to try and find it.
I’ll look around for it.
Before I waxed on about the book, I was going to mention that my birthday falls on a full, blue moon this year and I’m going full moon kayaking. I will not be attempting any video of the event. Happy kayaking and bug hunting and pizza eating!
Your remark about the pizza calls to mind one text my son sent me last year while the Irish band was in New York for the Men’s Big East Basketball Tourney. Domer wrote to say they’d just had pizza from “a real Italian,” and it was delicious — wonder what makes pizza better if it’s served by a real Italian?? Maybe I should have my feelings hurt — I’m part Italian (Sicilian, no less!), yet he’s never bragged on my pizza like that, haha!
It makes me feel better that someone your age experiences the same issues I do with things such as WiFi. I truly thought it was my advanced age.
Well, I can work with fixing technology. Just replace the computer with a tree and the error with some kind of pollution. In a way its nice to be slightly clueless on technology. I meet more people (who do know that stuff) and I don’t feel the need to keep updating to the next big thing. Just when I need something.
